Mentors!

This week saw the introduction of MENTORS during our Professional Practice tute.

So…what exactly is a mentor I hear all you devoted blog followers asking?

According to Monash University:

A mentor is someone more skilled or experienced who offers advice, support, and guidance to facilitate the learning and development of a more junior or less experienced person. Mentoring relationships occur in all aspects of life but are often a key feature of the organisational life where more senior staff take on the role of being a role model, trusted adviser, coach, and teacher to their junior colleagues. In the work environment, mentors can play an important role in the career advancement of more junior staff by offering on-the-job support, career advice and access to networks and organisational knowledge (both formal and informal). Many successful people have had mentors help them along the way.

In the fashion industry, a mentor is someone who we can turn to for guidance and leadership in areas that we might be unfamiliar with. Our mentor doesn’t have to be directly linked to fashion, but rather, it may be someone who is well-versed in how to run a successful business and who is well versed in a niche sector of the industry.

It’s important to have mentors in our lives – in university and beyond. To be able to have someone who we can look up to and call on for advice is so important, especially in an industry which is so fickle!

This weeks’ task is to decide on 4 mentors who specifically relate to the field of my major project – in my case, the fashion media field. After selecting 4, I will write ONE sentence on how each of my chosen 4 mentors and how they relate to my style and aesthetic. I will include images too. I’ll then select 2 of the 4 and white a short response on them, identifying what makes them so unique and interesting to me.

And a little somethin’ for the week…

“A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you, than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you.”

Bob Proctor –
Author, Speaker and Success Coach

I have a few ideas in mind so stay tuned for the week ahead!
